To my fellow music educators:

I am certain that we all agree that teaching young musicians to be expressive is a great challenge.   Admonitions from conductors and teachers to "play from the heart" or "sing" are often confusing to the young and generally end in frustration.

Many years ago, I learned about the teachings of Marcel Tabuteau, legendary principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra.   In addition to his orchestral duties, M. Tabuteau taught at the Curtis Institute, where he trained generations of brilliant oboists and greatly influenced countless performers in every area of music.

Marcel Tabuteau's concepts were first presented in James Thurmond's Note Groupings, a book that I have used for many years.   Through these concepts, I have successfully trained my high school and college ensembles to play in a more expressive manner.

Now, a relatively new book has come to my attention that explains M. Tabuteau's approach in a very accessible manner.   The book is Sound in Motion by David McGill, published by Indiana Press.   Mr. McGill is the principal bassoonist of the Chicago Symphony, and while studying at the Curtis Institute was trained in the techniques of Tabuteau.

In Sound in Motion, Mr. McGill not only articulates these concepts beautifully, but explains the necessity of an intelligent plan when dealing with expression.

On February 18, 2009 at 7:30 pm (EST), Mr. McGill will present a live workshop, featuring the Capital Wind Symphony.

If you are not familiar with these concepts, I feel confident that this workshop will forever change the way you and your students look at music.
